Whether you are a new mother or a veteran, we all know that sleep is a thing of the past once you have a baby. I knew I was going to get little sleep but it didn’t really hit me how bad it would be until after my baby was born.
I was also joking with my husband that I will be fine since I didn’t get much sleep either during graduate school. However, this was a different story… Getting 4 or 5 hours of sleep straight is better than sleeping for 6 hours but waking up every 1 to 2 hours during the night. I felt like I didn’t sleep at all.
Those were tough days and nights but I did get the chance to cuddle with my baby as much as I could.
Anyways, fast forward and he’s now sleeping through the night and I just want to share the items that I used and recommendations from other moms that will help your little ones sleep a little longer or through the night. Doesn’t that sound fantastic?!
There are so many things on the market so it could be overwhelming and it will be up to you and your baby to see which one works. The only way to do that is just try! They might like it right away or it might take a few tries to get the right item. Don’t give up!
Les get to the items!
White noise machine
A white noise machine can help mask out household noise while your baby is sleeping. There was a study in 2014 by the Pediatrics Journal that suggest white noise machine has the potential to be harmful if played at max volume in close proximity to the baby and for a long period of time. That’s why I our white noise machine is at least six feet away and a little more than half volume.
There are finding about how it can affect hearing, speech and language. I would recommend asking your pediatrician and doing your own research as well in order to determine what is best for your baby.
There are many types of white noise machine on the market and if used safely according to the recommendation then it will decrease the risk of complications for your baby.
When we were looking for sound machines to buy we went, we got White Noise Sound Machine because it was the deal of the day on Amazon. This white noise machine is simplistic and easy to use.
The Big Red Rooster Baby White Noise Machine is the Amazon’s Choice and has great reviews with good ratings.
If you’re looking for a more sophisticated white noise machine then the Hatch Baby Rest Sound Machine, Night Light and Time-to-Rise is a great machine as well. The ratings are 4.5 stars with more than 1,500 reviews. The Hatch Baby Rest Sound Machine is a night light and sound machine that you can control with your mobile phone to create the ideal sleep environment.
If your on the go, a clip-on travel white noise is a great option to help your baby get a sleep well anywhere. There are many options as well. This SoundBub, White Noise Machine and Bluetooth Speaker is super adorable and comes in different animals.
Sposie Booster Pads
The Sposie booster pads are placed seam side up in the diaper and it helps with nighttime leaks. They are also great for long car rides or naps. After my little guy started to leak through his diaper every day, I needed a solution.
I research on my mommy groups and also online for suggestions. Many recommended the Sposie booster pads and also up one to two size bigger from the daytime diaper. So, after implementing these two suggestions, the number of nighttime leaks have dramatically decreased. There might be a leak here or there depending on how much my son drank before he bed but much better than leaking dialy.
Swaddle and Sleep Sack
There are many ways to swaddle your baby and you can find many tutorials videos on YouTube for all kinds of swaddle. Swaddling gives the baby a sense of security and warmth and probably reminds them of being in the womb.
They are also less likely to startle themselves awake due to their moro reflexes.
I recommend the SwaddleMe or the Love to Dream Swaddle Up as they are secure and less likely to escape from their swaddle. I remember no matter how I swaddle my son in a blanket from the hospital, he would get out of it by the morning. This was when he was just born too! This is dangerous since it can cause suffocation if they are not able to move it away from their face. Thankfully the blanket was always tucked under his arms when this does occur.
Just remember that when your baby is able to roll over on their stomach that it is not safe to swaddle. This is likely the time to transition out of swaddle and the HALO SleepSack Swaddle is a great choice since you can take out the baby arms when they no longer are woken up by their startle reflex. There is also the Love To Dream Swaddle UP 50/50, where the arm are area can be unzipped.
Another swaddle transition that I have heard rave reviews about in the mommy’s Facebook group is the Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit.
I did not know this sleepsuit existed until after I transition my son off the swaddle. I remember the first night I didn’t swaddle him, he went to sleep at 2 AM whereas his normal time of 11 PM.
There were many recommendations for the Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit and there are different sizes for your baby.
Many of the swaddle and sleep sack are based on age and weight, so make sure you are picking the right size.
This is another great option to blankets when your baby is out of the swaddle. The sleep sack keeps their body and leg warm without the worry of a blank covering their face.
There are various brands to pick from but I really like is the Halo Sleep Sack because it can stretch and holds up really well after multiple washes. I’ve also heard great things about Nested Bean Zen Sack Classic
The Nested Bean Zen Sack mimic your touch with a lightly weighted pad to help baby fall and stay asleep for a longer period of time.

I think it is really important to read to your baby because it helps you bond with your little one. In addition, they also develop language and communication skills that will help them in the future.
I think it’s great to create a routine with your baby where you read books to them before bedtime, which lets them know it time for sleep.
Reading help brain activities, improves concentration, increase curiosity for knowledge, helps develop creativity and imagination. It’s never too late to read to your child! Studies shows that reading out loud even when they start school have benefits as well.
Creating a dark environment promotes the release of melatonin, which helps your baby fall asleep faster. However, I would wait until the baby’s internal clock has been established so they can distinguish between day and night.
This last item is not necessary but I think it is really helpful and it makes life easier. We have an Ecobee Smart Thermostat and we bought extra room sensors to make sure the temperature in the baby’s room stay between 68°F to 72°F. This is the recommended temperature for by expert for comfortable sleep.
My Angel Care Baby Monitor has temperature sensory so you can set it to alert you if the room temperature goes below or above your set temperature. This is helpful so I do not need to check the room temperature every now and then. I think they discontinue the baby monitor I bought but there are other monitors that have temperature sensor and alarms.
The Babysense Video Baby Monitor has many functions, including temperature display and high/low alarm. There are over 2K reviews with a 4-start rating.
These are either items I used or have high recommendation by other mommies. I hope these recommendation helps your baby sleep better at night and you too of course.
What other items or things do you do to help your baby sleep at night?
